Don’t Make it Precious: Quick and Easy Performance Devising Workshop

Workshop

Working with found objects and simple movement gestures that emerge out of text the participant with generate from prompts and time allotted in workshop. The combination of the props, text and movement will then push the participant to create a short piece that will be shared/performed in front of the other participants of the workshop. The objective of this workshop is to encourage participants to be less precious with theatrical/artistic creation and devising and that in fact one can generate a piece of theatre quite quickly and then build upon the idea moving forward.

 

Biography

An award-winning actress, playwright and choreographer, Anita Majumdar is also a graduate of the prestigious National Theatre School of Canada, holds a degree in English, Theatre and South Asian Languages from the University of British Columbia. Dancing for the last twenty years, Anita’s training originates in kathak, but she has also studied bharatnatyam and odissi. She is also the ongoing playwright-in-residence with Nightswimming, a company here in Toronto dedicated to serving new play development and their creators.  As a playwright, her self-written Bollywood musical on the issue of shadism, Same Same But Different premiered at Theatre Passe Muraille and Alberta Theatre Projects and was nominated for two Betty Mitchell Awards including a nomination for Outstanding New Play. Anita is the 2013 recipient of the Governor General Protege Prize in Playwriting under the mentorship of John Murrell and this past season, Anita was awarded two Dora Mavor Moore awards for Outstanding Performance and Outstanding New Play for her work on Boys With Cars.
