Paul teaches Canadian Theatre History as well as praxis-based scenography and theatre production.

In addition to Canadian theatre history which includes the innovations of Roy Mitchell, his research interests examine opsis in conjunction with the history and development of theatre production technology especially regarding modern applications of renaissance staging techniques; scenographic theory and practice specifically regarding the conjunction of design and dramaturgy; and, theatre architecture and technology.

His writing ranges from an analysis of an actual Commedia dell’arte batocio to an edited collection of essays on Futurism. Most recently with colleagues from the University of Waterloo he co-authored a book section derived from a SSHRC funded research project examining the original early 16th century staging of plays in Old Hall, Queens’ College, Cambridge.

He is Technical Director in the graduate unit of the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies where he regularly contributes scenic and lighting designs to departmental productions. He is a past member of the Associated Designers of Canada and a charter member of the Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology.
