Funding MA

In 2001, the Faculty of Arts and Science introduced a funding model that provides financial support to eligible graduate students in selected programs. This financial support helps the Faculty to recruit outstanding students and allows these students to focus on their studies and complete their degrees in a timely manner.

The Centre for Drama guarantees funding for all full-time students who are enrolled in the MA program.  In 2016-17, the minimum guaranteed funding package for domestic students was $15,000.

Funding packages for the 2017-18 academic year will be determined at a later date.

Students are responsible for any course-related expenses, as well as payment of their tuition and fees. Tuition and fees are subject to change on an annual basis.  In 2016-17, the fee for full-time domestic students was $8491.69.  Additional information is available on the Student Accounts website: http://www.fees.utoronto.ca/contact.htm

Funding Sources

Funding packages for MA students typically include UofT Fellowships (UTF) and Technical Production Assistantships (TPA).

University of Toronto Fellowship (UTF) – The Vice-Dean, Graduate Education and Program Reviews allocates UTF funds to each graduate unit on an annual basis.  Funding variables include the number of domestic and international students to be supported (e.g., the size and make-up of the funded cohort), the number and value of the scholarships won by students, and departmental sources of financial support.

Technical Production Assistantships (TPAs) – TPA positions involve students in the events and performances generated by the Centre’s students, faculty, staff, visitors, and alumni.  Each MA student will receive approximately 2-3 TPA assignments over the course of the academic year.  Assignments may include: Stage Manager, Production Assistant, Lighting Designer, Technical Assistant, Front of House Assistant, etc.

Major Awards

Students are encouraged to apply for internal and external awards (i.e. SSHRC, OGS) for which they are eligible.  Students who receive a major award/scholarship may have their funding package revised.

Canada Graduate Scholarships Master’s Award ($17,500) – December 1st deadline

MA applicants are highly encouraged to apply for the CGS M award.  The Program aims to develop the research skills of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. The CGS M awards can only be offered to students pursuing graduate studies at eligible Canadian universities, and the award must be held at the university that has made the offer.
