Welcome to the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto and the home of Canada’s largest and oldest graduate programs in these disciplines. We’re pleased to be able to share with you news of our recent change of name from the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama–a change much anticipated by students and faculty, and that you will find, as you find out about us on this site, suits us well.
On this website, you will find information on all aspects of our programs and activities–who we are and what we do, how to apply to one of our programs or attend one of our productions or book a theatre or attend a lecture. But no website is perfect–it is certainly no replacement for human contact. So take a look, and when you have questions, send us an email or give us a call. We’ll do our best to answer your questions and your needs.
As you travel through this site, and in particular if you are looking at the Centre as a place to study, here are three things we would like you to keep in mind.
We are located in the downtown core of Canada’s largest city, the perfect place to experience and to become involved in all kinds of performance, not just theatre but a wide range of music, dance, cinema, circus, comedy–and more.
We are a part of Canada’s largest university, and because of this we can offer a place for some of the best scholars in the world, from the broadest possible range of disciplines, to meet students researching in theatre, drama and performance studies. As you’ll see from our faculty list, we have participating scholars from Cinema, Classics, Comparative Literature, Curriculum Studies, English, French, German, Italian, Medieval Studies, Slavic Languages, Spanish & Portuguese—among others– as well as from the university’s three undergraduate drama, theatre and performance studies programs.
We believe that research takes many forms. Some of those forms are best served in the archive, and we have one of the best research libraries in North America. But some research projects are also well served in the laboratory of performance. We have two performance venues, along with our technical and production staff, available for use by both students and faculty as an integrated part of their research projects.

–and thanks for visiting!
